1、 Abstract: The paper compares the performance of a mixed oxide ceramic tool in dry and air-cooled turning of grey cast iron. It turns out that air-cooled turning of grey cast iron with mixed oxide ceramic tools offers a promising environment-friendly option.
2、 Introduction: This paper compares the performance of dry and air-cooled turning of a grey cast iron with mixed oxide ceramic tool. The surface roughness of the machined surface, tool wear, cutting forces and vibrations are the parameters, which have been studied. Considering that the data is noisy and it is not possible to have a large number of training and testing data, a novel procedure is employed for the training of the network. The air-cooled turning provided satisfactory performance in that range.
3、Experimental procedure: A series of experiment on turning were conducted in HMT make NH_26 lathe. The cutting forces were measured using a piexoelectric type 4-component dynamometer, which was fitted on the tool holder. The cutting tool used for the experiment was mixed triangular ceramic insert designated.
4、Full factorial experimental study of the cutting performance: A number of experiments were conducted in the desired range of process parameters, viz. cutting speed (v), feed (f) and depth of cut (d).It was decided to carry out 2-level full factorial design.The major advantage of air-cooled turning seems to be reduction of tool wear at high speed.It is seen that with air-cooling the growth of wear land is minimized. Other advantage is the lowering of cutting and feed forces. Against these advantages, there is very slight reduction in surface roughness in air-cooled cutting. Thus, air-cooled turning using ceramic offers attractive alternative to dry turning.
5、 Neural network modeling of tool life and surface roughness in dry and air-cooled turning: Two important performance parameters in turning process are tool life and surface roughness of the machined surface. Tool life estimation involves a number of tests to be carried out at various cutting conditions till the failure of the cutting tool.Neural network modeling has become a popular method for modeling of tool life and surface roughness in machining. The most popular network is multi-layer perceptron(MLP) neural network trainable by the so-called back propagation algorithm.
6、. Effect of air-cooling at higher cutting speeds: At the beginning of the present study, a series of experiments were carried out on dry turning of cast iron by ceramic tool in the cutting speed range 480–600 m/min.it is seen that high-speed turning of grey cast iron with mixed alumina ceramic provides a lowtool life. This observation is in line with the observations of Ghani et al. for high-speed turning of nodular cast iron by mixed alumina ceramic. However, air-cooled turning provides an enhanced tool life and may be adopted by industries for high-speed machining by ceramic tools.
7、 Conclusions:The performance of the dry and air-cooled turning of grey cast iron with a mixed oxide ceramic cutting tool was studied.This study also brought out some interesting and useful observations for future researches in this area.The main focus of the present work was to explore the possibility of improving the cutting performance of mixed oxide ceramic in turning of grey cast iron by means of air-cooling. The results are encouraging. The future work will concentrate in optimizing the process parameters of air-cooled turning process.
